According to police investigations and accounts from the victim’s family, Vipin Bhati is accused of killing his wife, Nikki Dowry, by burning her alive due to persistent and escalating dowry demands. The probe has revealed a pattern of domestic violence and harassment that had been ongoing for a significant period.
Initial reports and the family’s statements claim that Vipin and his in-laws were demanding a dowry of ₹36 lakh. Nikki’s father stated that despite giving a Scorpio car and a Bullet motorcycle previously, the family’s demands continued to grow, eventually including a Mercedes or ₹60 lakh. The family of the deceased woman also alleged that the two brothers, Vipin and his brother Rohit, did not work and were constantly asking for money. Nikki’s father had helped her open a beauty parlor, but Vipin allegedly started stealing money from the business.
A key point of contention that reportedly triggered the final, fatal fight was Nikki’s desire to reopen her beauty parlor. According to police, on August 21, a heated argument ensued after Vipin objected to her plans, claiming that running a parlor and posting reels on social media were not allowed in their family. The argument allegedly escalated into a violent assault, during which Nikki was hit, a flammable substance was poured on her, and she was set on fire.
The harrowing incident was witnessed by Nikki’s young son and her sister, Kanchan, who was also married into the same family. Kanchan captured parts of the assault on video, which showed Vipin and another woman assaulting Nikki and dragging her by her hair. Her son also recounted the events, stating that his mother was slapped and then set on fire with a lighter.
While the primary motive appears to be dowry-related, Nikki’s father has also alleged that Vipin’s motive for the murder was his relationship with another woman and that he wanted to kill Nikki because she had objected to his affair. This detail is also part of the ongoing police investigation.
After his arrest, Vipin Bhati was shot in the leg while attempting to flee police custody. When questioned by the media, he showed no remorse and denied killing his wife, stating that “she died on her own” and that “fights happen between husband and wife.” His mother has also been arrested in connection with the case.
