New Delhi, April 7, 2026 – In a heartwarming display of duty and humanitarian service, the staff of the Vijayawada Division of the South Central Railway (SCR) successfully assisted a pregnant woman in delivering a healthy baby girl aboard a moving train on Sunday, April 5, 2026.

An Unexpected Emergency at Annavaram

The incident unfolded on Train No. 13352 (Alappuzha–Dhanbad Express). The passenger, identified as Tarannum Khatun, was traveling from Chennai to Dhanbad with her husband, Ishad, and her mother in the B1 coach. Shortly after the train crossed Annavaram station, Tarannum went into sudden and intense labor.

Alarmed by the situation, her family members immediately alerted the onboard ticket-checking staff. Recognizing the urgency, the railway personnel swung into action to ensure the safety of both the mother and the unborn child.

Swift Coordination and a Special Halt

G. Jyothi, a Traveling Ticket Inspector (TTI/Amenities/Vijayawada), took immediate charge of the situation. Displaying remarkable composure, she coordinated with the Commercial Controller and alerted the 108 emergency ambulance service.

To facilitate a safe medical evacuation, railway authorities authorized a special emergency halt for the express train at Elamanchili station.

“This incident reflects the highest standards of dedication, alertness, and humanitarian service upheld by our frontline staff,” said Mohit Sonakiya, Divisional Railway Manager of Vijayawada.

Teamwork Leads to a New Beginning

Under the supervision of G. Jyothi and with the assistance of other railway staff—including Bipul Kumar (Sr. CCTC) and Juber Khan (CCTC)—the delivery was managed successfully. Female passengers on board also reportedly assisted in creating a makeshift private space and offering support during the birth.

Upon arrival at Elamanchili station, the train was met by a waiting ambulance. The mother and her newborn daughter were carefully shifted to the Government Hospital at Elamanchili.

Current Status

Medical authorities have confirmed that both the mother and the infant are stable and doing well under professional care. The timely intervention by the Indian Railways staff has been widely praised by passengers and officials alike, highlighting the critical role of railway personnel as first responders during transit emergencies.

This successful mid-journey delivery is yet another example of the “Service Before Self” motto often demonstrated by the Indian Railways‘ frontline workforce.
