New Delhi, December 23, 2025: A severe case of medical misconduct has been reported at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla, where a junior resident doctor was observed physically assaulting a patient. The incident, which took place on December 22, 2025, was documented in a 16-second viral video that has sparked widespread public outrage across Himachal Pradesh. In the footage, the doctor is seen repeatedly punching a patient who was lying on a hospital bed, leading to immediate disciplinary action and the suspension of the medical professional.
The victim, identified as Arjun Singh, a resident of Kupvi, had visited the hospital for a bronchoscopy test due to recurring pulmonary issues. According to eyewitness reports, the patient was advised by staff to rest on a vacant bed in the pulmonary medicine ward following the procedure.

The viral video acted as a catalyst for immediate government intervention. Following the directions of Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, a high-level inquiry was initiated by the hospital administration.
The incident has triggered massive protests outside the IGMC premises, with relatives of the patient and local residents demanding the permanent termination of the doctor’s license. It was noted by Health Minister Dr. (Col) Dhani Ram Shandil that such behavior is “completely unfit for medical services” and will not be tolerated in any government facility. As the inquiry continues in late December 2025, the doctor remains suspended and has been directed to report to the Directorate of Medical Education. The case serves as a grim reminder of the fragile trust between medical professionals and the public.
