
New Delhi, december 12, 2025: A viral video alleging that eggs sold by a premium brand, Eggoz, tested positive for residues of a banned antibiotic metabolite has sparked a wave of public anxiety and raised serious questions about food safety. The video, which connected the presence of these residues to potential carcinogenic risks, has caused consumers to panic and question whether eggs—a staple, highly nutritious food source—should be avoided entirely.
The controversy was ignited after an independent testing channel released a lab report claiming that a sample of eggs from the brand contained traces of AOZ (3-amino-2-oxazolidinone). AOZ is a metabolite of Nitrofuran, an antibiotic that is banned for use in poultry in India and many other countries because of its genotoxic potential, meaning it is linked to DNA damage and a possible increased risk of cancer over long-term exposure.
The presence of this metabolite in eggs marketed as “antibiotic-free” was immediately highlighted as a grave concern regarding regulatory oversight and compliance within the poultry industry, leading to calls for stricter enforcement of food safety standards.

In response to the backlash, the brand Eggoz issued a formal statement firmly denying the use of any banned antibiotics. The company asserted that its eggs are safe for consumption and that they fully comply with the standards set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). It was explained that trace residues, if present, could be the result of unavoidable environmental factors, such as contaminated groundwater, rather than direct antibiotic application.
To assure consumers, the company confirmed that additional, independent testing by accredited laboratories was immediately commissioned. This action was taken to reconfirm that their products remain free from banned chemicals, thereby aiming to restore consumer trust that was damaged by the viral video’s claims.
The primary question—Should all eggs be avoided?—has been answered by nutritional and medical experts who emphasize that the controversy surrounds supplier quality, not the food item itself.
Consumers are being advised to remain calm, choose eggs from trusted, verified sources that provide transparency regarding their farming practices, and continue to consume eggs in moderation as part of a balanced diet.
