New Delhi, December 08, 2025: The devastating fire at a popular North Goa nightclub this weekend, which claimed 25 lives, has plunged several families into inconsolable grief, none more so than that of 24-year-old Satish Rana from Uttarakhand’s Tehri Garhwal district. Satish, who was the sole financial support for his family, was one of the five victims from the hill state working at the ill-fated “Birch by Romeo Lane” nightclub in Arpora.

A Community’s Loss

Satish’s death has left his village in shock. As the eldest son, with two married sisters and a younger brother still pursuing his studies, the entire household relied heavily on the money he sent home from Goa. His parents, who are dependent on subsistence farming, now face an uncertain and financially crippling future.

The young man’s body is expected to arrive in his native village shortly after being identified through legal formalities. Local representatives and villagers have united in demanding both financial compensation and legal support from the government to help the shattered family navigate this immense tragedy.

The Tragedy Unfolds

The fire, which broke out late Saturday night, primarily claimed the lives of staff members, including 14 kitchen workers and 20 employees in total. It has been confirmed that five of the victims—Satish Singh, Jitendra Singh, Surendra Singh, Sumit Negi, and Manish Singh—were from Uttarakhand.

Initial reports suggest the blaze may have been triggered by “electrical firecrackers” set off during a performance, which quickly spread due to the club’s wooden ceilings. Crucially, post-mortem examinations indicate that 23 of the 25 victims did not die from burns, but from suffocation after being trapped in the basement kitchen and storage areas, which reportedly lacked adequate ventilation and fire exits.

Call for Accountability

The incident has brought to light severe lapses in fire safety norms. Investigations have confirmed the nightclub was operating without a mandatory Fire Department No-Objection Certificate (NOC). Furthermore, the club’s location on a narrow access road hampered firefighting efforts, with fire engines unable to get close to the venue.

Goa Police have filed an FIR, charging the club’s owners, managers, and event organizers with culpable homicide. Several arrests have been made, and the government has suspended three senior state officials for their alleged roles in permitting the club to operate without proper clearances.

The state government has announced an ex-gratia payment of ₹5 lakh to the next of kin of each deceased, a move that provides some immediate relief but can never replace the loss of a loved one, especially a family’s lone breadwinner. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered to submit a report within a week, promising a stricter audit of all high-footfall establishments in the state to prevent a repeat of this shocking tragedy.
