New Delhi, January 3, 2026: A horrifying video depicting an on-duty woman police constable being assaulted and partially stripped has triggered nationwide outrage after surfacing on social media this week. The incident was reported to have occurred on December 27, 2025, during a violent anti-mining protest in the Raigarh district of Chhattisgarh. The footage, which was widely circulated on January 1 and 2, 2026, shows the constable slumping to the ground and pleading for mercy while a mob of men aggressively heckled her and tore her uniform.

Pleas for Mercy Captured on Camera

The victim was observed in the viral clip sitting in an open field, surrounded by several men who were seen verbalizing threats and pulling at her clothes. In a heart-wrenching exchange, the constable was heard addressing the attackers as “brothers,” weeping as she folded her hands to beg them to stop. Despite her cries that she was only there because of her official deployment and had not harmed anyone, her pleas were ignored. One man was captured in the video threatening her with a sandal and hurling obscene abuses while another recorded the humiliation on a smartphone.

Escalation of Violence at Libra Chowk

The assault was linked to a larger confrontation that took place at Libra Chowk in the Tamnar block. Approximately 300 residents from 14 villages had gathered to protest against the Gare Palma Sector-1 coal block project, alleging that a previous public hearing was fraudulent. The situation turned volatile when protesters blocked the road and clashed with security forces. It was reported by officials that the police were eventually outnumbered, and during the chaotic retreat, the woman constable was left behind, becoming the target of the brutal assault seen in the footage.

Police Action and Arrests of Suspects

A swift investigation was launched by the Raigarh police immediately after the digital evidence was verified. On January 2, 2026, two suspects were arrested in connection with the crime. The arrested individuals, identified as Mangal Rathiya and Chinesh Khamari, are residents of the villages affected by the mining project. They have been booked under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for serious offenses, including attempted murder, outraging a woman’s modesty, and preventing a public servant from discharging their duty. Senior officials confirmed that efforts are ongoing to identify more individuals seen in the footage.

Political Backlash and Security Concerns

The incident has sparked a fierce political row in Chhattisgarh, with opposition leaders condemning the state’s law and order situation. It was remarked by Deepak Baij, the Chhattisgarh Pradesh Congress Committee president, that the incident was a “shameful stain on humanity.” He questioned the safety of common citizens if uniformed female officers could be subjected to such indecency in broad daylight. Meanwhile, the district administration has moved to cancel the controversial public hearing in an attempt to de-escalate the tension in the Tamnar region, though the emotional scars of the assault continue to resonate across the state.
