New Delhi, November 14, 2025: A significant controversy has been ignited across the cricket world after footage capturing private comments made by Indian players was widely circulated on social media. The incident, which was recorded by the stump microphone during the first Test match between India and South Africa at Eden Gardens, has caused widespread debate regarding player conduct.
Specifically, South African captain Temba Bavuma was reportedly targeted by verbal remarks that were interpreted as body-shaming and abuse. The comments were allegedly made by Indian wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant and pacer Jasprit Bumrah.
The chatter was picked up by the stump mic during the 13th over of South Africa’s first innings. An appeal for an LBW against Bavuma by Bumrah had just been turned down by umpire Rod Tucker. Following the decision, a discussion ensued among the Indian players regarding the height of the ball, which was then believed to have bounced over the stumps.
The subsequent exchange, which was clearly captured in the audio, was transcribed and quickly was made public. Bumrah was heard saying a Hindi phrase that translates roughly to “He is also short.” This sentiment was then affirmed by Pant, who added, “He is short, but it hit here.” Further abusive and body-shaming remarks regarding Bavuma’s height were then spoken by Bumrah, intensifying the backlash. The use of the derogatory term “bauna,” meaning dwarf or short person, was the subject of intense criticism.
Though a review was considered by Captain Shubman Gill, it was ultimately decided against. Replays later confirmed that the ball would indeed have missed the leg stump, lending credence to the belief that the ball was struck too high. However, the accuracy of the delivery was completely overshadowed by the offensive nature of the dialogue. The private conversation that was intended only for the fielders was unfortunately amplified for a global audience.

The ethics of using stump mic recordings have been regularly debated in cricket, but in this instance, player conduct was squarely placed under the spotlight. Professional athletes are expected to maintain high standards of respect and sportsmanship, and verbal abuse or body-shaming is strictly prohibited under the rules of the game.
The viral spread of the clip was quickly followed by calls for action to be taken against the players involved. Whether the incident will be subjected to an official review by the match referee or whether penalties will be imposed by the ICC remains to be seen. Regardless of the formal outcome, the reputation of the players has been significantly impacted, and the necessity for greater caution regarding in-game conversation has been highlighted for all international cricket teams. This widely reported incident has served as a stark reminder that all words spoken on the field are now routinely broadcast to the world.
