New Delhi, December 23, 2025: A significant counter-narrative has been presented by the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at the Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Shimla following the suspension and booking of a senior resident. While a viral video depicting the doctor physically striking a patient led to widespread condemnation, the incident is being described by his colleagues as “one-sided” and “lacking crucial context.” A formal defense has been mounted by the medical community, claiming that the physical altercation was preceded by extreme provocation and physical threats directed toward the healthcare worker.
The actions of Dr. Raghav Narula are being defended by the RDA as a “reflexive response” to a hostile situation rather than a premeditated act of violence. It has been alleged by the association that the 16-second clip currently circulating on social media was strategically edited to exclude the initial moments of the conflict.

While an FIR has already been registered against the senior resident, a demand for a “comprehensive investigation” into the behavior of the patient’s family has been raised by the resident doctors. A formal memorandum has been submitted to the Principal of IGMC and the Director of Medical Education, urging them to consider the testimonies of the nursing staff and other eyewitnesses.
The defense of the doctor has reignited the debate over the safety of medical professionals in India. It was noted by the association that while violence against patients is unacceptable, the daily harassment faced by junior and senior residents is frequently ignored by the public and the media.
As the inquiry continues in late December 2025, the atmosphere at IGMC remains tense. While the public continues to demand accountability for the assault, the medical fraternity stands firm in its demand for a balanced perspective on the pressures of the profession.
